Sounds like Ellsworth Toohey in The Fountainhead:
"In essence, freedom and compulsion are one. Let me give you a simple illustration. Traffic lights restrain your freedom to cross a street whenever you wish. But this restraint gives you the freedom from being run over by a truck."
Hume is a badass genius. Have you read any of his works on ethics? He disproved a 6000 year old philosophical fallacy when he was a high school student. That's probably why people respect him. And as for freedom and slavery being close to each other. Why not? I'm sure if you read the rest of his argument and understood both the definitions and logical method he uses, that you would come to a conclusion that his argument is strong, even if you still disagree.
